I really love the concept Cake has gone with for its follow-up to the Kalk electric

I really love the concept Cake has gone with for its follow-up to the Kalk electric motorcycle. This little utilitarian scooter—called the Ösa—is an equally weird looking back-to-basics ride for city folk to tool around on, and with that in mind the concept works quite well. It doesn’t look like a traditional scooter, but that’s mostly because it doesn’t have to. The Ösa is different from any other electric scooter in two ways. The first is that it has a removable battery, allowing city dwellers to haul the battery inside at night for a charge. You don’t need a garage, and you don’t need to rely on a public charging network. (You can also use the battery as a portable generator once you reach your destination.) The second difference is that it has a central “beam” on which many accessories can be mounted. You can add a second seat, a variety of baskets to haul stuff, or a side rack to haul long things like lumber or a surf board. This is all stuff I’ve covered before, but over the weekend I got a chance to ride one for a bit, and it was neat as all heck. Cake was hosting a public ride event last Saturday to show off the new bike, and I happened to be in the area that day, and I’...

Transverse belt slicing machine makes precision slicing of oblong vegetables possible

The new Volantis transverse belt slicing machine is designed for the precision slicing of oblong vegetables. The Belgian company, FAM, manufactures this slicer. Not only products such as cucumbers, carrots, and courgettes can be processed using this machine. It can also be used to slice green beans, gherkins, okra, celery, and potatoes. The Volantis can also process certain lettuce varieties. These are lettuces with a sturdy head, measuring up to 115mm in diameter. Included are iceberg lettuce and radicchio. This machine can handle compressible lettuce varieties too. These must have loose leaves and a diameter of 160mm. Here, curly lettuce, oak leaf lettuce, and arugula are included. Other leafy vegetables such as spinach and radish leaves can also be processed by this slicer. The Volantis can be fed manually or by any feeding system. The feeding system must, however, feed the product into the machine at a steady rate. The wide feeding channel lines up small, thin products for the cutting wheel. “The more than 2m long feeder zone ensures better product orientation. It lines the products up perfectly. They cannot topple over while they are being fed into the cutting wheel,&...

Synology RT2600ac + MR2200ac router review: A unique take on mesh networking

Synology made a name for itself over the last 10 years for its NAS enclosures, and in recent years the Taiwanese manufacturer has branched out into home networking. The RT1900ac was the first router from the brand, incorporating many of the software-driven features that make Synology products stand out. Synology built on that with the RT2600ac, a dual-band router with a similar web-based operating system that made Synology’s NAS products stand out. The RT2600ac debuted back in 2017, but it picked up a major update last year, allowing it to work as a mesh system. The update coincided with the launch of the MR2200ac, Synology’s first take on a dedicated mesh networking solution. The RT2600ac on its own costs $199, with the MR2200ac retailing for $140. Synology is bundling both as a mesh networking solution for $305, bringing it in line with other products in this space. I’ve been using the RT2600ac and MR2200ac in a mesh configuration for over a month, with the former as the base station and the latter as a satellite. Here’s what you need to know about Synology’s foray into the world of mesh networking. Synology’s mesh networking solution is a f...

“You smell those flowery tones? These are the basis of all women’s perfume,” says Guy Delforge,

“You smell those flowery tones? These are the basis of all women’s perfume,” says Guy Delforge, spraying a bottle of his own creation. From his workshop in the citadel perched above the Belgian city of Namur, he uses ingredients from around the world to craft his signature scents. A perfumer for 34 years, Mr Delforge, 78, notes a shift in the industry with customers pushing for natural, sustainable fragrances. “But today… customers want to know the artisan making their perfume. It reminds me of when I started selling perfume from my garage in the 1980s.” Millennials are the driving force behind the trends reshaping the sector, according to beauty industry magazine Cosmetics Business. It says they want more transparency and more gender-neutral scents – often based on citrus smells. Citrus is one of the seven families of smells; with floral, chypre (oak moss with fruity notes), and amber often regarded as female scents, while fougère (lavender/woody) woody and leather are often grouped as male scents. “A person is born liking one specific scent family and that preference rarely changes,” says Mr Delforge, whose eponymous line ...

Women’s Health may earn money from the links on this page, but we only feature products

Women’s Health may earn money from the links on this page, but we only feature products we believe in. Why trust us? Whether you’re planning a mid-winter tropical getaway or basking in the glorious days of summer, you’ll need to think about sun protection. It’s smart to arm yourself with sunscreen that’ll ward off skin cancer-causing UVA and UVB rays, as well as itchy, uncomfortable sunburns that can easily ruin any time in the sun. But, weirdly enough, sunscreen can actually cause irritated skin for some people. And not just in people with sensitive skin—for some, applying sunscreen can lead to a full blown allergic reaction. If sunscreen doesn’t always agree with you, here’s what you need to know about sunscreen allergies and how you can stay protected in the sun without lotion, straight from dermatologists. Yes, a sunscreen allergy is a real thing, and it’s pretty common, doctors say. But it’s not just any sunscreen that will cause a negative reaction—it’s typically the chemical-based ones that are problematic. “I recommend avoiding chemical-based sunscreens for the face, especially the ingredients avobenzone and oxybenzone [two key irritants],” says Lisa S...
